OTS condemns so-called “Presidential Elections” in Karabakh

The Organization of Turkic States (OTS) has condemned the holding of the so-called “presidential elections” in Karabakh, Turanews.kz reports.

Secretary General of the OTS Kubanychbek Omuraliev said that the elections were a “provocation” and a “gross violation of international law.” He called on the separatists to refrain from any actions that could interfere with the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Omuraliev also expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s efforts to reintegrate the Armenian residents of the Karabakh region.

The so-called “presidential elections” were held in the Karabakh region on September 9, 2023. The elections were organized by the separatist regime, which is not recognized by any country.

The elections were boycotted by the majority of Armenians in Karabakh. The Armenian government has called the elections a “sham” and a “violation of the rights of the Armenian people.”

The OTS is a regional intergovernmental organization of Turkic-speaking states. It was founded in 2009 and has 12 member states: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The OTS has been active in promoting peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. It has also been working to facilitate the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The OTS’s condemnation of the so-called “presidential elections” is a significant development. It sends a clear message that the organization does not recognize the separatist regime in Karabakh.
