German Bundestag Passes Law for Easier Citizenship Acquisition

The Bundestag, Germany's parliament, has given its final approval to a government bill aiming to streamline and expedite the process of acquiring German citizenship

The bill, which received 382 votes in favor, 234 against, and 23 abstentions, was proposed by the German government on November 1, 2023.

One notable change includes allowing individuals to obtain German citizenship without renouncing their original citizenship. The amendments are expected to take effect three months after official publication, likely on April 1.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the goal of integrating long-standing members of society into the democratic process, stating, “Our democracy needs people who defend it and make it strong.”
