Kyrgyzstan Penalizes 21 Officials After Truck Accident Injures Schoolchildrenx

Following a tragic incident where over 30 schoolchildren were injured by a truck in the Suzak district of the Jalal-Abad region, Kyrgyzstan has disciplined 21 officials. This comes after the interdepartmental commission concluded its investigation into the May 2 accident during the “Uraanym Manas” cultural event in the village of Zherge-Tal.

The commission, established by President Sadyr Japarov, found that the event’s organizers failed to ensure participant safety. Specifically, regional and district internal affairs heads did not fulfill their responsibilities, and there was inadequate communication between educational institutions and local administrations.

The investigation revealed that local government heads were not informed of the event date, complicating organization due to non-working days from May 1 to May 5. The decision on the event date was communicated to the Suzak district administration via telephone, exacerbating coordination issues.

The commission recommended disciplinary actions, including the dismissal of certain ministry and local government officials. Out of the 21 disciplined, six were proposed for dismissal. The event involved 2,878 students and 341 teachers from 18 schools, yet only two traffic police inspectors were assigned for road safety.
