Kazakhstan’s People’s Writer and renowned poet Muhtar Shakhanov has passed away.
The Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan extended its condolences to the writer’s family, relatives, and the entire nation, honoring his legacy as a distinguished poet, playwright, and public figure.
In its statement, the ministry подчеркнуло that Shakhanov was among the rare literary figures who successfully combined powerful poetic expression with a strong civic voice. His works brought a fresh perspective and depth to Kazakh poetry, becoming an enduring part of the country’s cultural heritage.
Beyond literature, Shakhanov was known for his active stance on social issues, often speaking out on matters concerning the nation and its future. His principled character, unwavering sense of justice, and dedication to public interests earned him lasting respect.
Born in 1942 in the Otrar district of southern Kazakhstan, Shakhanov built a multifaceted career spanning journalism, public service, and diplomacy. He served as a People’s Deputy during the Soviet era, later becoming a member of Kazakhstan’s Parliament, and represented his country as Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan from 1993 to 2003.
His literary works were translated into more than 20 languages, while his plays were staged both in Kazakhstan and abroad. He also authored lyrics for widely known songs, further cementing his influence across the cultural sphere.
Over the course of his career, Muhtar Shakhanov received numerous national and international awards, gaining recognition across the Turkic world.
His passing marks a profound loss for Kazakhstan, leaving behind a rich literary legacy and a lasting imprint on the nation’s cultural and intellectual life.
