CSTO Collective Security Council Session Commences in Astana

The Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has convened for a regular session in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Prominent attendees include Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov. The event also features the participation of CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev and SCO Secretary General Zhang Min.

Noticeably absent from the meeting is representation from Armenia. According to Armenian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ani Badalyan, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan will not attend the associated Council of Foreign Ministers, Council of Defense Ministers, or the Security Council Secretaries’ Committee meetings of CSTO member states.

Kazakhstan assumed the CSTO chairmanship on January 1, 2024. During this tenure, significant milestones include the adoption of a resolution at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, highlighting cooperation between the United Nations and the CSTO.

This resolution emphasizes the CSTO’s role in regional security, including peacekeeping efforts, counter-terrorism, combating transnational crime, and addressing the consequences of natural and man-made disasters. These contributions align with the objectives and principles of the United Nations.
