Azerbaijan launches anti-terrorist operation in Nagorno-Karabakh

On September 19, 2023, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced that it has launched “anti-terrorism measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh. The agency cited the strengthening of the positions of the Armed Forces of Armenia, the increase in the number of trenches and dugouts, and the mining of territories as the reasons for the operation, Turanews.kz reports.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan, on the same day, a car of the Azerbaijan State Highway Agency and military personnel of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were blown up by a landmine allegedly planted by the Armenian military in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. There were dead and wounded.

The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan stated that the visit of the Armenian army to Karabakh violates the Tripartite Declaration adopted in 2020 and threatens peace and stability in the region. The Azerbaijani side announced that it is launching an anti-terrorist operation, during which it will be possible to destroy military targets using high-precision weapons. The Russian peacekeeping forces and the Turkish-Russian joint control center have been informed about the start of the operation.
