Azerbaijan marks 31st anniversary of Khojaly massacre

Azerbaijan honors the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide committed by Armenians on February 26, 1992, Turanews.kz reports citing Anadolu Agency.

Since early morning of February 26, thousands of residents of the Azerbaijani capital have been flocking to the “The Cry of the Mother” monument erected in the Khatai district of Baku in memory of the victims of the tragedy.

An official ceremony was held near the complex with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev, and after a while ordinary citizens began to carry carnations to the memorial, who came here with the flags of Azerbaijan and photographs of the victims of the genocide in their hands.

The monument was also visited by the residents of Khojaly who survived during those tragic events, as well as the relatives of the victims.

The townspeople said prayers for the repose of the souls of the dead, many could not hold back their tears, remembering the tragic event that took place 31 years ago.

On the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenian military formations, with the support of the 366th motorized rifle regiment stationed in Khankendi, committed genocide against the population of the city of Khojaly.

As a result of this bloody massacre, 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 older people were killed, 8 families were completely wiped out, 25 children lost both parents, 130 children lost one of their parents, 487 people were seriously injured, 1,275 people were taken hostage, and the fate of 150 of them is still unknown.
