Kyrgyzstan Plans to Limit Access to TikTok

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan are considering measures to restrict access to the popular social media platform TikTok. The State Committee for National Security has expressed concerns about the lack of a structured approach to content censorship, especially in spaces catering to children.

The Service for Regulation and Supervision in the Communications Industry, operating under the Ministry of Digital Development, has reached out to internet service providers, urging them to limit access to TikTok.

The move follows a letter from the State Committee for National Security highlighting the absence of a systematic content censorship approach on TikTok within Kyrgyzstan, particularly concerning content aimed at children. Officials cite the Law on safeguarding children’s health and holistic development as grounds for action.

The directive calls for compliance with radio frequency regulations and relevant legal provisions, requesting internet service providers to restrict TikTok access within Kyrgyzstan’s borders. A response is expected by April 18, 2024.

This decision comes after the Ministry of Culture’s previous call to block TikTok, citing concerns from several non-governmental organizations about its adverse effects on children’s mental health and development.

The proposed restriction has sparked widespread debate among the public and experts. Critics argue that banning the platform could harm small and medium-sized businesses, curtail freedom of expression, and limit opportunities for self-expression, particularly among young people, thus raising broader questions about democracy and digital freedoms in Kyrgyzstan.
