Kazakhstan declares July 13 as Day of National Mourning

Kazakhstan declared June 12 as the Day of national mourning for those who lost their lives in wildifre in the Abai region of Kazakhstan. The corresponding decree was signed by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Turanews.kz reports citing the press service of Akroda.

“The head of state signed a decree declaring a nationwide mourning in the Republic of Kazakhstan on June 12, 2023 in connection with human casualties as a result of a wildfire in the Abay region,” the press service said in a statement.

Recall that on June 8, large-scale wildfires broke out in the forests of the Abay region in eastern Kazakhstan. As a result of these fires, 60 thousand hectares of forest land were reduced to ashes, and unfortunately, 14 people lost their lives. In response to the severity of the situation, a state of emergency was declared in the Abay region. The President of Kazakhstan personally traveled to the affected area to inspect the scene and assess the situation.
