The wartime diary of Kaiyrzhan Mukhtarov, a Kazakh soldier who experienced World War II from 1941 to 1945, has been published in English.
Titled A Teacher’s Voice from the Front: A Kazakh Soldier’s War Diary, 1941–1945, the book is based on the authentic diary Mukhtarov kept while serving on the front.
A teacher before the war, Mukhtarov was at the front from June 22, 1941. His wartime journey took him through Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary and Austria. His diary records retreats, encirclements, battles, hunger and everyday life at the front from the perspective of an ordinary soldier trying to survive.
After the war, Mukhtarov returned to Kazakhstan and devoted much of his life to education, teaching mathematics to generations of students.
The original wartime diary is now preserved at the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The English edition was prepared and translated by his grandson, Arshat Orazov. It also includes historical notes, wartime and postwar photographs, details of Mukhtarov’s journey across Europe, and images of pages from the original manuscript.
