Flood Preparedness: 71% of Kazakhstan’s Territory Covered in Snow

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Yerlan Nyssanbayev, reported that as of March 11, 71% of the country’s territory remains covered in snow.

Snowmelt has already begun in southern and western regions, while central, northern, and eastern parts continue to accumulate snow, with heavy precipitation expected in March.

Regions at high risk of flooding include Aktobe, Kostanay, Karaganda, Akmola, North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, Ulytau, and Abay regions. Medium risk is noted in Almaty, Jetisu, Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan, and Atyrau regions.

For the first time, Kazhydromet has released detailed reports for each region, along with weekly hydrological forecasts. In case of sudden weather changes, storm warnings will be issued 2-3 days in advance.
