Trump Open to Reducing Tariffs for TikTok Deal

On March 26, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is willing to ease tariffs on China to facilitate the sale of TikTok by its parent company, ByteDance, to a non-Chinese buyer.

According to the Lianhe Zaobao newspaper, ByteDance must finalize the deal by April 5, or TikTok faces a ban in the U.S. due to national security concerns.

Initially, the ban was set to take effect in January 2024, but Trump extended the deadline. Speaking to reporters, he suggested that if no agreement is reached, the deadline could be further postponed.

Under the 2023 legislation, ByteDance was required to divest TikTok by January 19, 2025. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the ruling, leading to TikTok’s temporary shutdown in January. However, after Trump returned to power, the platform resumed operations.

Trump has hinted at further deadline extensions to reach a deal, but TikTok has yet to comment.
