The World Health Organization (WHO) is officially preparing for the possibility of a nuclear event as conflict escalates in the Middle East. Hanan Balkhy, Regional Director for the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean office, revealed to Politico that the global body is prioritizing readiness for what she calls the “most dangerous scenario.”
The WHO’s strategy covers a broad spectrum of threats, ranging from the tactical use of nuclear weapons to targeted strikes on nuclear energy facilities. Balkhy warned that while protocols are being established, the sheer scale of devastation from a nuclear incident cannot be fully mitigated. She emphasized that the environmental and health fallout from such a catastrophe would haunt the region for several decades, making preventive diplomacy more critical than ever.
