Uzbekistan Launches First National Census in 37 Years

Uzbekistan has launched its first nationwide population census since 1989, marking a major demographic milestone. According to the latest estimates, the country’s population has surpassed 38 million — nearly double the figure recorded more than three decades ago.

The 45-day campaign began with a digital phase, allowing citizens to complete the questionnaire online.

The National Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan reported that over 80 percent of respondents submitted their data through a dedicated online portal. More than 55,000 trained enumerators are now conducting door-to-door visits to ensure full nationwide coverage.

The survey, comprising over 70 questions, is designed not only to determine population size but also to provide in-depth insights into the country’s socio-economic conditions and demographic trends. Preliminary results are expected to be released by July 1, with the findings set to guide future government planning and policy development.
