Turkmenistan Pursues Partnership with SCO for TAPI Project

Turkmenistan is looking to enhance its partnership with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in key areas of cooperation, particularly focusing on the implementation of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project.

According to the Trend news agency, this was discussed during a visit by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov to Pakistan for the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting.

The Turkmen delegation highlighted that the current relationship with the SCO offers real opportunities to boost cooperation in transport, communications, energy, trade, and investment.

Moreover, they emphasized the importance of joint infrastructure projects that could strengthen ties with SCO member states and partners, with the TAPI project identified as a crucial initiative for regional energy security.

The TAPI project is a significant undertaking aimed at transporting natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. Construction of the gas pipeline, which is expected to supply 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually, began in Turkmenistan on December 13, 2015.
