Türkiye quake update: the death toll rose to 44 thousand and 374 people

AFAD President Yunus Sezer announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the earthquake has increased to 44,374.

The death toll in earthquake disaster that occurred in the south of the country on Feb. 6, has reached 44,374.

The head of Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Türkiye (AFAD), Yunus Sezer, pointed out during a press conference that 9,990 aftershocks were recorded following the earthquakes that occurred in the state of Kahramanmaraş at dawn on February 6, according to the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

He said that search and rescue work has been completed in about 21,000 buildings, and that operations are currently focused on removing rubble completely in the affected areas.

He explained that efforts are continuing with great momentum to erect tents, residential containers and permanent homes for the victims of the disaster.

On February 6, two devastating earthquakes struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria, the first measuring 7.7 degrees and the second measuring 7.6 degrees, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks.

According to the Turkish government, more than 173,000 buildings collapsed or were damaged as a result of the earthquakes.
