Türkiye commemorates 109th anniversary of Çanakkale victory
On March 18th, Türkiye commemorates the 109th anniversary of the triumph in the Battle of Canakkale - a pivotal and grueling confrontation during the First World War.
For Türkiye, March 18th holds profound significance. It marks the celebration of the Canakkale Victory, honoring the courageous individuals who made ultimate sacrifices for their homeland. This national holiday is observed with great pomp and ceremony across the country.
During the First World War, nearly 400,000 Turkish soldiers united to defend against the Allied forces of the Entente, determined to seize control of Istanbul. Tragically, approximately 250,000 Turkish soldiers lost their lives in this monumental battle. On March 18, 1915, British and French troops, unable to gain ground in naval clashes, were compelled to retreat. This victory served as a catalyst for the subsequent national liberation movement in Anatolia, culminating in the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye in 1923, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The valor displayed by Turkish troops in the face of adversity uplifted the spirit of the nation. One exemplary figure is Private Seyit Ali Onbashi, also known as Seyit Ali Chabuk. Serving in the artillery of Mejidiye fort, Seyit demonstrated remarkable courage during the battle. When the projectile launcher malfunctioned, Seyit single-handedly lifted and loaded a 215 kg projectile into the cannon, symbolizing the indomitable spirit and bravery of the Turkish soldiers.
