The city of Shusha in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan has been declared the cultural capital of the Islamic world for 2024. The decision was made during the 12th Conference of Ministers of Culture of the Islamic World, which was held in Doha, Qatar, Turanews.kz reports.
The city of Shusha was one of the important centers of the historical, cultural, and socio-political life of Azerbaijan, as well as one of the symbols of Islamic civilization. It was captured by the Armenian Armed Forces in 1992 and liberated by Azerbaijan in 2020.
In 2022, Azerbaijan declared Shusha the year of Shusha and organized numerous cultural events to promote the revival of the city’s cultural life. The International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) also declared Shusha the cultural capital of the Turkic world in 2023.
