Kyrgyzstan to Acquire Two State-of-the-Art Helicopters from South Korea

Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations is set to purchase two modern multi-purpose helicopters from South Korea, according to Minister Boobek Azhikeev.

The decision was made under the direct instruction of President Sadyr Japarov, as reported by Kabar news agency.

The helicopters, to be supplied by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), are designed to withstand severe weather conditions and operate effectively in mountainous terrain. They will be used for civil protection, rescue missions, medical evacuations, humanitarian aid, and other emergency response tasks.

“This is a strategic investment aimed at saving lives and minimizing future losses,” said Azhikeev.

Valued at approximately $71 million, the deal stands out not only for the advanced technology but also for the exceptionally favorable financing terms offered by South Korea:

  • Interest rate: 0.1%;
  • Repayment period: 40 years;
  • Grace period: 10 years (no payments required).

“Such conditions are rare even by international standards. Not every country has the opportunity to acquire such high-tech equipment on these terms,” the minister noted.

Currently, the ministry operates a fleet of three helicopters, one of which was received as a gift through international cooperation. The ministry is also upgrading its technical infrastructure, with recent investments in firefighting equipment, heavy machinery, specialized gear, and new facilities.

At present, an official South Korean banking delegation is in Kyrgyzstan to finalize negotiations and technical assessments for the purchase.
