Gyumri to be “Sports Capital” of CIS Countries in 2024

Gyumri, Armenia, has been recognized as the sports capital of the CIS countries in 2024. The announcement was made at a regular meeting of the CIS Council for Physical Culture and Sports held in Minsk, Belarus, Turanews.kz  reports.

In addition to being named the sports capital, Gyumri will also host a conference of the Council for Physical Culture and Sports of the CIS countries. The conference is expected to bring together sports officials and athletes from across the CIS region.

The decision to recognize Gyumri as the sports capital of the CIS countries was made in recognition of the city’s rich sporting history and its commitment to promoting physical activity. Gyumri is home to a number of world-class athletes, including Olympic medalists Artur Aleksanyan and Gor Minasyan. The city is also home to a number of sports facilities, including the newly built Artur Aleksanyan Sports Complex.

The appointment of Karen Giloyan as Chairman of the Council for Physical Culture and Sports of the CIS countries is another sign of Armenia’s commitment to promoting sports. Giloyan is a former athlete himself and has held a number of high-level positions in the Armenian government. He is well-positioned to lead the Council and to help the CIS countries achieve their sporting goals.
