Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili Resigns

Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, has officially resigned from his position.

The chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, is set to take over as the new head of the government.

The announcement came during a briefing at the government administration, where Irakli Garibashvili shared the decision with the public. “Today I am leaving the post of prime minister,” he stated, highlighting that the decision had been discussed with his team.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t Garibashvili’s first time in the role. He initially assumed the position of Prime Minister of Georgia back in 2013, succeeding the founder of the Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili. However, he resigned on December 30, 2015, with Giorgi Kvirikashvili taking over the role at that time.

Prior to his second stint as Prime Minister, Garibashvili served as the head of the country’s defense department. He resumed the position of prime minister on February 22, 2021, succeeding Giorgi Gakharia. The transition marks a significant change in Georgia’s political landscape, as Irakli Kobakhidze steps into the role of leading the government.
