Chinese Scientists Successfully Clone a Yak

In a scientific milestone, Chinese researchers have successfully cloned a yak using full-genome screening and somatic cell cloning technologies, according to BELTA.

The cloned calf was born via cesarean section on July 10 at a yak breeding facility in southwestern China. Weighing 33.5 kg, the calf is significantly heavier than typical newborn yaks. A day later, Xinhua reporters confirmed that the calf was healthy and already able to stand and walk.

The cloning project was launched in July 2023 as a joint initiative between Zhejiang University’s research team, the local government of Damxung County, and the Plateau Biology Institute of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Professor Fan Shenguo of Zhejiang University, who led the project, stated that this achievement will play a key role in improving yak breeds and strengthening livestock systems in the Tibetan plateau.
