China’s Population Could Dip Below 1 Billion by Century’s End
India has surpassed China to become the world's most populous nation, with an estimated 1.442 billion people, according to a report from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The UNFPA attributes India’s population growth to socioeconomic advancements and a reduction in maternal mortality rates. Notably, India’s share of global maternal deaths dropped from 26% in 1990 to 8% in 2020, a result of improved access to maternal health services.
Currently, 26% of India’s population falls within the 10-24 age bracket, with life expectancy projected at 71 years for men born in 2023 and 74 years for women.
In contrast, China’s population peaked at 1.426 billion in 2022 and has since begun to decline. Projections suggest India’s population will match China’s by April 2023. Experts anticipate China’s population may fall below 1 billion by the end of the century, while India’s population is expected to continue growing in the coming decades.
