Chess Player Accused of Poisoning Opponent with Mercury in Dagestan

A shocking incident occurred at the Dagestan Classic Chess Championship in Makhachkala, where a chess player allegedly poisoned her opponent with mercury.

According to the Telegram channel BILD, Amina Abakarova, a 40-year-old chess player, attempted to poison her 30-year-old opponent, Umayganat Osmanova from Kaspiysk, before their match. Abakarova reportedly broke a thermometer and smeared mercury on Osmanova’s table and chessboard.

During the game, Osmanova became ill, began vomiting, and required medical attention. The incident was captured on video, leading to Abakarova’s arrest. She has been banned from all competitions and could face up to three years in prison.

Abakarova cited “personal hostility” and Osmanova’s perceived arrogant attitude as her motive for the act.
