Azerbaijan Responds to Armenia’s Comments on Peace Treaty
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has criticized Armenia for what they call attempts to distract from progress on the peace treaty. This comes after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan urged Azerbaijan to continue working towards peace.
According to Ayhan Hajizade, spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Armenia is deflecting by responding to Baku’s comments on the draft treaty only now, over two months later. He also accused Armenia of removing unagreed-upon provisions from the draft, despite significant progress with roughly 80% of the text finalized.
Hajizade stressed the importance of resolving outstanding issues and called Armenia’s actions “inadmissible.” He added that changes to Armenia’s constitution reflecting its territorial claims against Azerbaijan are a prerequisite for signing the final agreement.
This response follows Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statement on Friday, where he revealed significant progress on the peace treaty with Armenia. He highlighted the commencement of border demarcation, albeit on a small 13-kilometer section, as a positive step towards a lasting peace agreement.
The potential signing of the treaty aligns with predictions from Standard & Poor’s (S&P) who, in June, forecast the agreement’s completion before the COP29 climate conference in Baku this November.
