Azerbaijan bans marriages between blood relatives
Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis (parliament) has passed a law amending the Family Code to prohibit marriages between close relatives:
The new amendments include two specific clauses added to the article outlining circumstances that prevent marriage. These clauses ban marriages between children of brothers and sisters who share common biological grandparents and between biological cousins.
Additionally, a clause allowing the reduction of the age of consent for minors wishing to marry by up to one year under certain conditions has been removed. Parliament noted that this provision often restricted the rights and freedoms of minors, as the criteria for valid reasons were unclear.
According to the revised law, the legal age for marriage in Azerbaijan remains set at 18 years.
The new law will take effect on July 1, 2025.
