Azerbaijan and Armenia have taken a historic decision to close the chapter of prolonged confrontation and move toward lasting peace, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, according to Kazinform.
Speaking during a panel discussion on Eurasia’s economic identity, Aliyev stressed that continued conflict would have led to endless violence, suffering, and casualties. He noted that the leadership of both countries jointly agreed that the conflict had to be brought to an end and that new opportunities for peace should be explored.
The Azerbaijani leader recalled that decades of confrontation resulted in territorial losses and the displacement of millions of Azerbaijanis. Despite these hardships, he said, the country never abandoned its commitment to justice, international law, and the restoration of sovereignty.
Aliyev also criticized international institutions, stating that they failed for years to enforce their own decisions, including four UN Security Council resolutions demanding the withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijani territory.
According to him, the peace process has advanced at an unprecedented pace. Following the serious military escalation in September 2023, the sides moved toward signing a joint declaration by August 2025, while the peace agreement itself was initialed with the participation of US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, President Kassym Jomart Tokayev expressed full support for the shared efforts of Azerbaijan and Armenia to achieve a durable peace.
