Armenia Plans Construction of New Nuclear Power Plant
Armenia is preparing for a project with the planned construction of a new nuclear power plant, as stated by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Gnel Sanosyan.
The announcement was made during an event celebrating Builders’ Day in Yerevan.
In his speech to industry professionals, Minister Sanosyan emphasized the importance of preparing for this large-scale project, which aims to mobilize the entire construction industry in Armenia. He expressed optimism about the growing capabilities of construction companies in the country, noting their advancements in professional skills and new technologies.
Nuclear energy plays a crucial role in Armenia’s energy sector, with the existing Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) contributing about 40% of the country’s electricity. The current NPP, which began operation in the 1970s, was initially slated for decommissioning in 2016. However, its service life was extended until 2026 following extensive modernization efforts, and it is now expected to operate until 2036.
To facilitate the construction of the new nuclear power plant, the Armenian government established a dedicated enterprise on August 1, 2024. This entity is tasked with preparing the project’s justification, securing government approval, and engaging with international partners to address the organizational and financial aspects of the construction.
