Armenia Contemplates European Union Membership

Armenia is deliberating over the prospect of joining the European Union, as indicated by Armenian Foreign Minister Mirzoyan's recent remarks in Yerevan.

Highlighting the nation’s “European aspirations” and the intention to diversify its foreign policy, the Foreign Ministry emphasized Armenia’s readiness to submit an application for EU membership no later than the upcoming fall, according to RBC reports.

In an interview with TRT World, Ararat Mirzoyan, head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, emphasized the discussions surrounding “new opportunities” for Armenia, including the possibility of EU membership, amid the challenges faced by the country in recent years.

Mirzoyan underscored the democratic path chosen by Armenia, with backing from Brussels and Washington, while also stressing the importance of maximizing diversification in partnerships and alliances, including maintaining traditional ties while looking towards the East.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has echoed Armenia’s desire to deepen relations with the EU, emphasizing that this endeavor does not conflict with regional relationships. He announced plans to submit Armenia’s application for EU membership no later than the fall, citing the republic’s security interests, particularly in economic terms.

While concerns have been raised about potential disruptions in ties with Russia, Pashinyan reassured that the application process typically spans several years. However, he highlighted the assurance of a swift accession process from the West, indicating a strategic shift towards closer ties with the European Union.
