Armenia Opens Rail Connection to Europe via Turkey

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the Akhalkalaki–Kars railway is now fully operational for cargo transportation, reports Kazinform.

— I am pleased to announce that the Akhalkalaki–Kars railway line is now open for Armenian exports and imports, along with the rail route passing through Azerbaijan. This is a monumental event for our country’s economic life. I extend my gratitude to our partners in Turkey and Georgia, — Pashinyan stated.

According to the Prime Minister, Armenia now has rail connections with Russia through both Georgian and Azerbaijani territories, as well as access to China via Russia and Kazakhstan. Furthermore, direct rail connectivity to the European Union has been launched through the territories of Georgia and Turkey.

— In the future, we anticipate the opening of the Armenia–Turkey and Armenia–Azerbaijan railways, followed by the Armenia–Iran route via Nakhchivan. We expect to witness these developments in the near future as part of the implementation of the TRIPP project, — the Prime Minister shared on his Telegram channel.

Later, during a campaign speech in the village of Sarnaghbyur in the Shirak region, he added that reconstruction works on the Gyumri–Akyaka (Turkey) and Yeraskh railway sections are set to begin.

— Work on the Turkish side has already commenced, and the railway will be opened. We will also start modernizing the Yeraskh junction. The government will take charge of this. Despite the existing concession agreement, we will allocate the necessary funds to repair and restore the track, ensuring the rail connection opens, — he concluded.
