According to the BBC, at least 20 people were killed and more than 50 injured when a suicide bomber detonated explosives inside the church.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed that the attack was carried out by members of a terrorist organization. The assailant reportedly entered the church, opened fire on worshippers, and then detonated a suicide vest. Two men were involved in the assault, with one killing himself in the explosion.
Greece’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack in strong terms, calling it “despicable” and urged Syrian authorities to take swift action:
“We unequivocally condemn this heinous act at the Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus. Syria’s transitional government must hold those responsible to account and ensure the safety of Christian and other religious communities,” the statement read.
