Biden Encourages Azerbaijani President to Pursue Peace Deal by Year-End

In a letter addressed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of reaching a peace agreement by the end of the year.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed the United States’ readiness to assist in establishing a lasting and dignified peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, aimed at ending the long-standing conflict.

With global attention focused on Baku for COP29, Biden noted that this is a pivotal moment for Azerbaijan to showcase its commitment to peace on the world stage. He acknowledged that finalizing the remaining points of the peace agreement will require creativity and compromise from all parties involved. “I am confident that you will not miss this opportunity, and I urge you to complete the agreement this year,” Biden stated.

Additionally, Biden mentioned that he has instructed his senior director for Europe, Michael Carpenter, to discuss potential U.S. contributions to the peace process with Aliyev and to gather the president’s insights on talks with Armenia.
