Today, Turkmenistan Celebrates Independence Day

September 27 marks Turkmenistan's most important national holiday — Independence Day.

Historically, this holiday was celebrated on October 27-28, following the country’s declaration of independence on October 27, 1991, when the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR adopted the Constitutional Law proclaiming Turkmenistan as an independent democratic state. In 2018, the holiday was moved to September 27.

In Kazakhstan, around five thousand Turkmens reside, with most of them living in the Mangystau region.

Turkmen cultural centers were established in Kazakhstan in 1995, starting in Almaty, and later expanding to the Mangystau, Karaganda, Kostanay regions, and Astana. These centers play an active role in promoting Kazakh unity and social harmony through dance and vocal groups, as well as youth branches.

Today, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan maintain strong fraternal relations and continue to develop cooperation in trade and industry.
