Increased Risk of Avalanches and Rockfalls in Tajikistan Prompts Warning
The Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, operating under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, has issued a cautionary alert to both residents and visitors of the country.
According to the Khovar news agency, the committee highlighted a heightened risk of avalanches and rockfalls in various mountainous regions, including those under republican subordination, the Dushanbe-Khujand highway, and western areas of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.
In light of these potential hazards, the committee strongly advises individuals to avoid extended journeys, the collection of firewood, hunting, and fishing activities. Furthermore, citizens are urged to steer clear of avalanche-prone zones and exercise vigilance and caution.
This warning follows previous advisories from the committee, which emphasized the lingering threat of avalanches due to precipitation. Specifically, regions such as GBAO and mountainous areas of the Gissar Range, as well as major highways including Dushanbe-Khorog, Dushanbe-Khujand, Dushanbe-Lakhsh, and Khorog-Murghab are highlighted as susceptible zones.
Recalling events from a year ago, between February 15 and 21, Tajikistan experienced over 200 snow avalanches, 7 landslides, and 6 rockfalls. Tragically, these natural disasters resulted in the loss of at least 19 lives.
