Zohreh Elahian first woman to register for Iran’s snap elections

Seventeen individuals have applied to participate in the presidential election within three days.

Zohre Elahian, a former Iranian lawmaker and scholar, has made history as the first woman to register as a candidate in the snap presidential election following the tragic death of President Ibrahim Raisi in a plane crash. This news was reported by Mehr agency.

“A ray of hope has emerged from the sky of Islamic Iran. I have submitted my documents to the election office as a representative of the women’s society in my country,” Elahian wrote on her page on X.

Among the seventeen candidates who applied in the span of three days are notable figures such as Ali Larijani, the former head of parliament, Abdul Nasir Hemmati, the former head of the Central Bank, General Vahid Hagganian, the former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Alireza Zakani, the mayor of Tehran, and Saeed Jalili, the representative of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah.

Six current and five former members of the Iranian parliament have also expressed their intention to run for office.

The registration of candidates will commence on May 30 and continue until June 3.
