World Day Of Turkic Languages Marked In Mexico City

Mexico City, January 28, 2026 – An event dedicated to the World Day of Turkic Languages was held in the Mexican capital, organized by the Yunus Emre Institute in Mexico with the participation of the diplomatic missions of Kazakhstan, Türkiye and Azerbaijan.

Ambassadors of the three countries addressed the audience in their native languages. Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Mexico Almurat Turganbekov emphasized that Turkic languages constitute an essential part of the shared historical and cultural heritage of Turkic peoples and play a crucial role in preserving their identity and spiritual continuity.

He also highlighted the growing importance of humanitarian and cultural cooperation among Turkic states, noting the role of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) as a key platform for promoting Turkic languages and culture. According to the ambassador, Kazakhstan remains actively engaged in OTS initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural ties and expanding dialogue between the Turkic world and Latin American countries.

The program featured a lecture by Professor Mehmet Necati Kutlu, who spoke about the evolution and interconnection of Turkic languages. He elaborated on their proto-Turkic roots and the Orkhon-Yenisei inscriptions, among the earliest written records of Turkic civilization.

Professor Kutlu also underlined the significance of the World Day of Turkic Languages, observed on December 15, which was officially established by a UNESCO General Conference resolution adopted in Samarkand in November 2025. He noted that the initiative contributes to reinforcing linguistic unity and fostering deeper cultural integration across the Turkic world.
