Women’s Radio Station Shut Down in Afghanistan

Afghan authorities have shut down Radio Begum, a women-run radio station in Kabul, claiming it violated broadcasting policies.

According to CNN, the station reported that representatives from the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture detained staff members during a search of their office in the capital.

Begum reported that on Tuesday, staff members had their computers, hard drives, files, and phones confiscated, and two men who were not in leadership positions at the organization were arrested.

The ministry later announced that the station would be shut down, citing “violation of broadcasting policies and misuse of the radio station’s license,” including “broadcasting programs to a foreign channel without permission.”

The ministry did not specify which channel it was referring to.

Reporters Without Borders, an independent advocacy organization, denounced the suspension and demanded its reinstatement.

Before the shutdown, Radio Begum broadcast six hours of daily lessons for women across Afghanistan, as well as programs on health, psychology, and spirituality.
