Woman Detained in Uzbekistan for Attempting to Sell Her Daughter

A resident of Uzbekistan was arrested in Samarkand for attempting to exchange her 13-year-old daughter for a house valued at $25,000.

According to a report by the Zamon program, the 41-year-old woman, originally from the Kashkadarya region, had come to Samarkand seeking work. She was detained at a restaurant after receiving the $25,000 in exchange for her daughter. The woman claimed she had no home and was offered a house in return for her child, later expressing regret for her actions.

The court found her guilty under paragraph “a” of Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (“Human trafficking committed against a person under the age of eighteen”) and sentenced her to 5 years and 2 months in a maximum-security penal colony.

The woman’s children have been placed under state protection.
