Uzbekistan to use $43.5 Million seized from Gulnara mKarimova to reduce maternal and newborn mortality

The $43.5 million seized from the eldest daughter of the first president of Uzbekistan, Gulnara Karimova, will be used to support the UN program to reduce maternal and newborn mortality, according to the Uzbekistan Vision 2030 Foundation.

The program will be implemented jointly with UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO and will last for 30 months, covering 600 thousand women and newborns throughout the country. One of the program’s key goals is to improve the survival rate of low birth weight infants.

The fund is used to return assets that have been or will be permanently confiscated as part of criminal proceedings against Gulnara Karimova. In the future, it was decided to use these funds to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty and hunger, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation.

Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan and Switzerland had already signed an agreement on the return to Tashkent of $131 million from the assets of the eldest daughter of the late Uzbek President Islam Karimov, which have been in banks since 2012.
