Uzbekistan Introduces Penalties for Financing Mass Riots
Uzbekistan will now punish not only participants of mass riots but also those who organize and finance them.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed amendments to the Criminal Code, introducing penalties for individuals who undergo special training in organizing riots, handling weapons, and using explosives. Offenders face fines ranging from 300 to 600 basic calculation units (approximately $9,500–$19,000), community service for up to three years, or imprisonment for five to seven years.
If riots result in damage to property, harm to citizens, or resistance against law enforcement, perpetrators may receive prison sentences of 10 to 15 years.
However, individuals who voluntarily report planned riots will be exempt from criminal liability.
Notably, the number of serious crimes in Uzbekistan increased by 24% last year.
