Uzbekistan and Russia Sign Gas Supply Deal for 2.8 Billion Cubic Meters

Uzbekistan has signed a two-year contract with the Russian Federation for the supply of 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 16, 2023, Turanews.kz reports.

Under the terms of the agreement, Gazprom will supply Uzbekistan with 9 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. The gas will be imported in transit through Kazakhstan via the Central Asia-Center pipeline.

The price of the gas has not been disclosed, but the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan said that it has been agreed “within the framework of the planned reforms based on market prices in the region, as well as on the basis of current prices in the country and their market principles.”

The agreement will allow Uzbekistan to meet its own needs for gas, but it will not be enough to fully fulfill the country’s contract for gas exports to China.

Analysts say that the agreement is a positive development for Uzbekistan, as it will help to secure the country’s energy supplies. However, they also note that the volume of gas involved is relatively small, and that Uzbekistan will need to find additional sources of gas in order to meet its long-term energy needs.
