Uzbekistan Aims to Combat Aral Sea Environmental Disaster with Aerial Saxaul Planting

In a bid to address the environmental consequences of the Aral Sea’s desiccation, Uzbekistan is gearing up for the upcoming season of afforestation using aviation to sow saxaul, according to an announcement on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Since 2018, Uzbekistan has embarked on an ambitious state program to establish forest plantations on the dry bed of the Aral Sea, aiming to alleviate the aftermath of the environmental catastrophe resulting from the sea’s drying process.

In recent years, collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan and the Forestry Agency have successfully cultivated vast expanses of desert vegetation on the former sea bed. The upcoming weeks will mark the resumption of the sowing season.

Employees from the Main Directorate of Engineering Protection and Construction and Restoration Work of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan have spent the past weeks preparing saxaul seeds. These seeds will be distributed with the assistance of aerial methods, highlighting the innovative approach to reforesting the barren landscape left by the Aral Sea’s depletion.
