UN General Assembly’s general debate: Kyrgyz President Advocates for Redirection of Military Spending to Development

He highlighted the alarming trend of increased global military expenditure, which reached a record high of $2.5 trillion in 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute—a 6.8 percent rise from the previous year.

Japarov pointed out that while nations invest heavily in armaments, many populations lack access to basic services such as clean water, healthcare, and education. He stressed that wars exacerbate poverty and inequality, arguing that resources spent on conflict could be better utilized to tackle global challenges like climate change and humanitarian crises.

The President also raised concerns about growing economic inequality, noting the chronic underfunding and neglect faced by countries in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. He urged developed nations to enhance financial aid for infrastructure and social development in poorer countries, while also advocating for technology transfers that would empower these nations to build sustainable economies.

Addressing the urgent issue of climate change, Japarov outlined Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. He stated that over 95 percent of the country’s energy comes from hydropower, positioning it as a leader in renewable energy efforts. The President also mentioned ongoing projects like the construction of the innovative city “Asman” near Lake Issyk-Kul and plans for a “green city” in Kemin.

In conclusion, Japarov supported UN Secretary-General’s call for reforming the international financial system to alleviate debt burdens on developing countries, enabling them to effectively combat climate change.
