Turnout for parliamentary elections exceeds 91% in Turkmenistan

Deputies of parliament, members of the halk maslahaty and gengeshes are elected for a term of five years

At the time of the closing of the polling stations, the voter turnout in the elections of deputies of the Assembly (Mejlis) of the 7th convocation, as well as members of the People’s Councils (Halk Maslahaty) of regions, districts, cities and local self-government of Turkmenistan amounted to 91.12%. This was announced by the Central Election Commission of the Republic.

Polling stations closed at 19:00 local time.

In Mary velayat, 90.87% of voters voted. The highest turnout was registered in Akhal velayat – 91.74%.

In total, 2,644 polling stations were open in the republic from 07:00 to 19:00 local time.

The country with a population of 6.2 million has 3.5 million registered voters.

In the elections to the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, citizens elected 125 deputies.

According to the Central Election Commission for Elections and Referendums, 258 candidates representing the Democratic Party, the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Agrarian Party of Turkmenistan, as well as groups of citizens who can also nominate their own candidates, have been registered across the country.

Deputies of parliament, members of the halk maslahaty and gengeshes (membets of the National Council of Turkmenistan) are elected for a term of five years.

All citizens of Turkmenistan who had reached the age of 18 on voting day could take part in the voting.
