TURKSOY Celebrates 90th Anniversary of Kyrgyz Writers’ Union and Honors Year of Aitmatov

On November 21, 2024, Kyrgyzstan marked the 90th anniversary of the National Union of Writers of the Kyrgyz Republic with a grand celebration highlighting the enduring legacy of literature in the nation’s cultural and social development.

TURKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev extended heartfelt congratulations to the Writers’ Union, recognizing its contributions to Kyrgyz and world literature. During the event, several writers were honored with medals, certificates, and gifts from TURKSOY in acknowledgment of their achievements.

Akylbek Japarov, Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, emphasized the vital role of literature in addressing societal challenges and fostering national identity. Japarov proposed a series of initiatives to support the Writers’ Union and encouraged families to instill a love for reading, suggesting parents spend at least 15 minutes daily reading with their children.

The celebration drew representatives from foreign countries and international organizations, including Ufuk Usman, Chairman of the Union of Eurasian Writers, Ulukbek Esdavletov, Chairman of the Union of TURKSOY Writers, and Gayrat Majidinov, Deputy President of Uzbekistan’s Writers’ Union. They lauded Kyrgyzstan’s literary heritage and highlighted its role in shaping the younger generation.

Speakers consistently underscored the global impact of Chyngyz Aitmatov’s works, describing him as a literary giant whose contributions transcend borders. In his honor, the Chairman of the Writers’ Union of Kyrgyzstan, Kanybek Imanaliev, proposed that the United Nations declare 2028 the Year of Aitmatov, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the celebrated author.
