Turkmenistan and Tajikistan Foreign Ministries Affirm Support for “One China” Principle

The foreign policy departments of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan have expressed their positions on the recent elections in Taiwan, TuraNews.kz reports.

Turkmenistan, maintaining a recognized status of permanent neutrality, adheres strictly to international law in its foreign policy. In alignment with the United Nations Charter, which emphasizes the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of states, Turkmenistan staunchly supports the “one China” principle. The Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reiterates that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate authority representing the entirety of China.

Similarly, Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoes this sentiment. In response to the elections in Chinese Taiwan on January 13, 2024, Tajikistan expresses firm support for the “one China” policy. The government of the People’s Republic of China is acknowledged as the sole legitimate and representative authority for all of China. Tajikistan recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China’s territory and adamantly opposes external interference in the internal affairs of this friendly nation.

The presidential elections in Taiwan saw the victory of Lai Qingde, the candidate from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who traditionally advocates for full independence for the island. Lai secured 40.1% of the votes, with a voter turnout of 69.8%, according to the Central Election Commission (CEC).
