According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the average age of the Turkish population in 2024 reached 34.4 years and is projected to exceed 35 years by 2026. In 2015, this figure was 31 years. Such demographic changes indicate an acceleration of the population aging process.
The number of people aged 65 and over, who are considered elderly in Tğrkiye, approached 9 million last year, increasing by more than 20% in the last five years. If in 2018 the ratio of the elderly population to the total population was 8.8%, in 2024 it increased to 11%. In 2024, about 45% of the elderly population were men and more than 55% were women. According to the demographic forecast, the share of the elderly population in 2030 will be 12.9%, in 2040 – 16.3%, in 2060 – 22.6%, and in 2080 – 25.6%.
In the provinces of Sinop, Giresun and Kastamonu, the average age has already reached 43 years. Although in the short term the growth in the number of people of working age continues, in the long term its reduction is expected, which will undoubtedly affect the country’s economy in the future.
Experts predict that by 2050, the average age of the Turkish population may increase to 45 years. Such demographic changes are directly related to a decrease in the birth rate and an increase in life expectancy.
Earlier, it was reported that 2025 was declared the “Year of the Family” in Türkiye. News within this initiative is aimed at supporting the youth and demographics of the country.
