Türkiye to continue supporting TRNC
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Türkiye will continue to support the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in all areas, including the issue of its recognition by the world, Turanews.kz reports.
Fidan made the remarks on Tuesday during a joint press conference with his Bulgarian counterpart, Maria Gabriel. He was commenting on the recent incident in which UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) intervened in the construction of a road in the TRNC.
Fidan said that the UN had violated its neutrality in this incident and that Türkiye fully supported the fair position of the TRNC. He also said that the actions of the UN peacekeeping forces were incompatible with the founding spirit of the United Nations.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has said that the construction of the road is a humanitarian project that will facilitate the direct access of TRNC citizens living in the village of Pile to their homeland.
Fidan also touched upon the prospects for Türkiye’s accession to the European Union. He said that Türkiye’s membership in the EU would open up new opportunities for both the bloc and the region. He urged European leaders to take advantage of the “new window of opportunity” before it closes.
In the press conference, Fidan and Gabriel also discussed bilateral relations between Türkiye and Bulgaria. The two ministers exchanged views on Türkiye’s EU membership process, as well as regional and international issues. Gabriel stressed that Bulgaria firmly supports Ankara’s aspirations for EU membership.
The Turkish-Bulgarian relations have been traditionally close. The two countries have been working together on a number of issues, including trade, tourism, and security. In recent years, the two countries have also been cooperating on energy projects.
The Turkish government has been a strong supporter of the TRNC since its establishment in 1983. Türkiye has provided the TRNC with economic, military, and political support. The TRNC is only recognized by Türkiye, and it is not a member of the United Nations.
The issue of the TRNC is a complex one, and there is no easy solution. However, Türkiye has made it clear that it will continue to support the TRNC in all areas.
