Türkiye has been elected as a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee for the term 2023-2027. The elections, which took place on November 22 during the 24th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention in Paris, saw Türkiye receiving the highest number of votes in its category, with a total of 137 votes, TuraNews.kz reports.
This marks Türkiye’s third participation in the work of the World Heritage Committee, following previous terms in 1983-1989 and 2013-2017. The Turkish Foreign Ministry emphasized the country’s commitment to utilizing its extensive experience and knowledge in managing and protecting its 21 World Heritage sites, representing civilizations spanning from Neolithic times to the present in Anatolia.
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee plays a crucial role in promoting cultural and natural monuments with universal value, serving as the custodian of humanity’s common heritage. Additionally, the committee oversees matters related to the World Heritage List, which currently includes 21 sites from Türkiye.
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy expressed that Türkiye will actively contribute to the decision-making process for candidates aspiring to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List over the next four years.”
