Türkiye Launches National Program to Develop Domestic Nuclear Reactors

Türkiye has unveiled a new project to build its own nuclear reactors as part of the government’s “National Technology Initiative.” The announcement was made by Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır.

The minister stressed that the program aims to provide strategic sectors such as defense, metallurgy, chemistry, and artificial intelligence with stable, carbon-free, and uninterrupted energy. Advancing domestic nuclear technology is expected to bolster the country’s energy independence and technological sovereignty.

The initiative includes the establishment of research centers, workforce training, industrial capacity building, and the adoption of advanced solutions in safety and environmental protection. Alongside state institutions, the private sector, universities, and tech startups are also expected to contribute.

Currently, Türkiye is carrying out its first nuclear power plant project, Akkuyu, in cooperation with Russia.
